Beyond Self-Help to Boost Self-Esteem
By: Bee Yourself
There are times when the self-help tips to raise your self-esteem just do not work and you have to seek help from another source. When your low self-esteem begins to affect your personal life to a degree that it starts to adversely impact it, you may need to see a professional. Here are some alternatives to self-help to deal with low self-esteem:
Personal Therapists and Counselors:
When you see a personal therapist or counselor, you get the benefit of seeing someone who is educated and trained in dealing with these areas that cause low self-esteem. Many times just talking to someone who is not acquainted with you is more effective in helping you to see yourself better plus come up with solutions to deal with unhealthy emotions and a poor state of mind. Another big advantage is that the personal therapist or counselor is trained to root out the causes for the self-esteem issues. This ability to get at the causes can give the professional better insight for finding solutions to help the patient overcome his or her self-esteem issues. The key is to get the patient to start finding something internally good to focus on.
Performing Tests to Determine if the Condition is Physical
Sometimes low self-esteem is not an emotional or mental problem. Many times what manifests as emotional or mental problems in a patient is actually a physical problem. These conditions could be merely symptoms of a serious illness that has yet to be diagnosed, changes in the patient’s hormone levels, or reactions due to changes in medication used to treat other conditions. But just prescribing medication for an emotional or mental problem should never be done unless the patient has first had a physical exam to isolate if there are any physical factors causing the poor mental or emotional state.
Hypnosis Therapy
Hypnosis therapy or hypnotherapy involves putting the patient in almost a trancelike state or otherwise known as a deep sleep. Then, when the patient is in this condition, suggestions are made to the patient basically while he or she is asleep. The hope is that the nervous system will be triggered by these suggestions and the physical and emotional problems will begin healing. Its strength is that the process can make you re-think what you believe about yourself and bring out thoughts about what are your best qualities.
Seminars, Tapes, and Books Designed Around Self-help Curriculum
Many times the person suffering from low self-esteem can be helped through a self-help solution but only from a solution designed by a trained professional in the field. There are all sorts of professional-grade self-help resources such as books, tapes, CDs, and even the seminar format with a guest speaker or motivational coach who can advise you on life circumstances that could be causing you to attack your own self-esteem. Be careful that self-help does not typically help with chronic self-esteem problems but it can be very beneficial for those with minor issues.
We have gone over some of the ways beyond self-help only where a person can seek to find solutions for their self-esteem issues. Take some time and choose the one that is right for you and start feeling better about yourself.
